This would be our last cruise of the holiday, we have had some wonderfully warm dry weather. The countryside has changed a bit and we are no longer in a valley but the land is more open and sometimes quite wet, yesterday we were traveling along the summit, today we would be going down. As you can see some of the locks have been lengthened, the day was still without a ripple on the water. Once we passed the bridge the crew erected the handrails on the top deck and we could go aloft to enjoy the view, as there was only 10 of us they only opened the front half of the deck. We were now in an area of open wetland with the canal contained between two narrow banks.
Once we were clear of all the flat open countryside the top deck had to be closed again and the handrails all removed for the bridges.
The next point of interest was Écluse Réchicourt which I understand is the deepest lock in France and replaces a flight of 6 old locks which took 6 hours to clear, this one is half an hour.
You leave the empty lock though a guillotine gate in the bottom end wall. | ||
After lunch we arrived at our destination for the night which was Lagarde, here we caught a coach to Sarrebourg to visit a chapel containing the largest stained glass window by Chagall , also included was a trip to a museum but we gave that a miss and went to a small street café for a small beer
Back at the boat we got changed for farewell drinks with the crew followed by our Gala Diner. Susie served us in her smartest uniform that didn’t quite go with the mask.
