Our first day on the island and the coach picked us up from outside our hotel. Our group was spread over three hotels in Qawra so each morning and evening there was a short ride round town.
Today we would be doing a walking tour of Valletta with a guide. I thought he was bit of a strange chap, but it worked out OK. The coach dropped us in the new town,
We walked up past the fountains and tree lined boulevards to the old town that is built on several levels and heavily fortified.
We made our way down to overlook the harbour for mid day when a canon is fired. It left a lovely smoke ring drifting across the blue sky . This is repeated again at 4 pm every day and is known as the saluting battery.
Our walk included a visit to St John Cathedral where restoration work is on going to the floor mosaics

We finished our day in town walking down to Fort St Elmo, a star shaped fort that is situated on the tip of the Sciberras Peninsula. We were there to see the Malta Experience, it’s a 45-minute audio-visual show that covers the entire 7,000-year history of the island, from prehistoric times to the present day. It’s all subterrain and to get to it you go through a tunnel than runs below the road.
From here our coach picked us up to take us back to our hotel driving along the side of the harbour past the giant cruise liners
We returned to Valletta later in the week, this time under our own steam, well a hop on hop off bus actually to visit the Armoury. They even had some old printing presses in there . The armoury collection is vast
This ended our visit to the town and we headed back to catch the hop on hop off bus down at the ancient market place where just the remains of the columns now stand, The bus would take us half way round the island before getting back to Qawra. There are a few of these old buses kicking around Malta as we waited for a more modern one.
