One of the included excursions was a coach trip north along the coast stopping off with free time in a couple of towns on the way. The first stop was Amalfi which has an interesting Cathedral where they have uncovered lots of the past building. The entrance from the street was a large flight of stairs. Part of the building was free but there was a small charge for the more interesting part. We start with the free access.
As you can see the ceiling decoration is fabulous

We then headed of and paid a small entry fee to see the remaining parts of the building .
|
We didn’t spend much time in the rest of the town as we had other places to visit.

Back on the coach and it was off to Maiori where we stopped with more free time which included finding somewhere to eat. It was an interesting town with a river running down the middle of the street, some sections paved over and others open, it also turned out it was market day.
We visited a walled area which was all above a large pond. Looking down into the water it looks like rooms of a building .
| To blossom, to die but the voice of Caruso it can’t finish in this magical corner I create with her singing paradise. |
We stopped for a comfort break in a small village square with one tine café and a church set high in the hills .
Below are the views from the coach often through the windows so there may be some reflection. Mostly they grow the lemons in large fruit cages, we were also told that they grafted the lemon trees onto orange tree root stock when they found they could grow better lemons than oranges.

There are quite a few defensive towers that were built along the coast, they couldn’t get them much closer to the sea.

The coast line is quite dramatic and the coach drivers earn their money working their way around the twists, bends and hills. Foreign coaches are banned from this route and the size of local ones limited. Loads of cars are parked on the road side as flat land is so scarce they don't have room in the properties for cars. Houses are built on any flatish piece of land on the rock faces .
The views of the general coastline were quite spectacular all the way up the coast, the return journey was via the motorway, no photos of that .
